    Description

Offered is this antique booklet containing the complete set of 12 unused detachable black and white photo postcards with scenes from Nancy, France. Each card is separated by a piece of tissue paper; most of these are still present. The cards depict major buildings, monuments and other scenes of the area, with some having people in the scenes. In addition to the postcards, written on a blank page in the front is a handwritten note from a US soldier, Cpl. Charles Gordon Tate of Battery F, 316th Field Artillery, which I think was part of the 81st Division. The note is dated Dec. 17th, 1918, only about five weeks after the Armistice, and was written just after Tate's visit to Nancy (see photo #2). I was able to find out a little bit about Cpl. Tate. His family was from North Carolina, he was the son of Col. Samuel McDowell Tate, who fought for the Confederacy at Gettysburg, and had a son (Charles Gordon Tate, Jr.) who fought in World War II.
The booklet is approx. 5 3/4" x 3 1/2". Each card is approx. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2". The cards are in good condition, with no tears, but they have yellowed and the backs have some spots, etc. As mentioned, most of the tissue papers are present and they are in good condition, with no major tears. The cardboard cover of the booklet has no tears but there is some light soiling. The back cover and the last card are beginning to come loose but are still attached.
