4 WWI letters sent from Private Elmer Johnson, Co H 101st US Infantry while stationed in France. Letters are sent to family in Jamaica Plains, Mass. Letter show signs of age, creases, folds, stains etc. see photos. Censored
Letter dated June 10 1918 . . . We were in the trenches but came out the other day and are just behind the lines in dugouts held in reserve . . . Awaiting to be of use in case of a sudden attack or raid . . While we were in the trenches in the dead of the night you could hear across form our lines singing and dancing . . .seemed like they were loaded with rum giving them false courage . . .
Letter dated June 11 1918  . . .we are still in the reserve trenches but expect to move back for a rest soon . . . I received your most welcome letter . . . Weather here is grand . . .
Letter dated July 16 1918 . . . I could not write sooner we have been in the trenches for some time . . . I have seen quite a bit of excitement and could tell you lots of things . . .
Letter dated Sept 22 1918 . . . Received both of your letters . . .it is just one year ago yesterday that we landed in France and it seemed just like yesterday we landed here . . . We went over the tops the other day fro the second time and did great work and captured quite a number of prisoners. .
