Description
Sweet little demi set from the Soreno Hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida. The hotel, built in the Mediterranean Revival style, opened in 1924 on Beach Drive. It was one of 10 hotels built during the boom years in Florida and winter tourists flocked to the area. During WWII, the hotel served as quarters for servicemen. Later it was used during the winter seasons but finally closed its doors in 1984. It was demolished in 1992. Mayer China manufactured this demitasse cup and saucer set in 1050, as noted on the backstamp. Both cup and saucerfeature a shield with Soreno across the front, bracketed by lions with a banner below, all in shades of orange, tan and black. Matching lines surround the verge and rim. Cup stands approx. 2 1/2 inches tall and saucer measures 5 inches diameter. No chips or cracks on either piece, showing little use at all. The saucer has a tiny blur at the 2 o'clock position, which I've pictured, done during the manufacture of the piece. It hardly shows at all but wanted to mention it. If you collect Floridiana, don't miss this set! Thanks for looking!
