Devon Archer’s lifelong love of creating art was inspired by her mother's animal artwork and a generous stroke of family talent. She studied art at several schools and taught private small group art lessons for several years. Growing up on the family farm in Burke, Virginia influenced Devon' s own animal artwork, as well as her love of horses and other animals. Devon's artwork also shows her interest in Native American art which first began with a family trip to Santa Fe, NM when she was a teenager, and from her husband's Lakota Sioux heritage. Today most of her artistic energy is concentrated on still life oil painting and Custom Painted Ponies for the special people in her life.
The inspiration for this Pony came to a Virginia-based artist while attending a Powwow, when she saw an American flag and an Eagle staff carried proudly by two Native American veterans of foreign wars. She imagined a Painted Pony that symbolically connected those warriors who courageously fought against the United States government, with those who proudly fought to protect America.
It would be a white Pony painted with traditional Plains Indian symbols, standing between Old Glory and an Eagle Staff, with a royal blue coverlet draped over the horse’s back on which were sewn patches from each of the United States Armed Forces: Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Devon lives in Warrenton, Virginia. Her original Masterwork, "Fancy Dancer", won the People’s Choice Award in the Native Art of Horse Painting national competition, and is also available as a figurine.
The Trail of Painted Ponies celebrates the magic of the horse as an artistic canvas, the rich culture of America, and the unique talents of independent artists. The artists behind this exquisite collection come from all different backgrounds, and the inspirational stories behind each design are as heartfelt as they are beautiful.
The Trail of Painted Ponies announced that Westland Giftware would no longer be reproducing Painted Ponies. Beginning in January 2010,Enesco became the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of The Trail of Painted Ponies figurines and other merchandise. The Westland molds were broken and all of these original Westland Ponies should become even more highly sought after, rare, and valuable.
My photos are of the actual pony in this listing! Please consider these images as part of the description.
I have looked this pony over carefully and can detect no obvious cracks or chips in it prior to shipping. Please note that some ponies (particularly older ones)may have minor imperfections or show signs of touch-up, such as under-paints or over-paints (as most ceramic and some resin pieces do) that occurred during manufacturing, as each one is hand painted. Most painted pony boxes have shelf wear or the tag may be creased or slightly bent; this does not affect the pony in any way. The pony was displayed in a glass cabinet for my personal enjoyment;
